Bangladesh Bank celebrated the completion of the Stakeholder Engagement & Grant Cheque Distribution Event for the SREUP (Program to Support Safety Retrofits and Environmental Upgrades in the Bangladeshi Ready-Made Garments Sector) at Utshab Hall, Radisson Blu Dhaka Water Garden. The event gathered key stakeholders to share updates, distribute grants, and discuss sustainable finance in the RMG sector.
SREUP, which provides low-cost loans and incentive grants through financial institutions, aims to enhance environmental and economic sustainability. The project has disbursed significant funds to date. Dr. Md. Kabir Ahmed, Executive Director, Bangladesh Bank, and His Excellency, Mr. Charles Whiteley, Ambassador, Delegation of the European Union to Bangladesh emphasized their commitment to a safer and greener RMG industry.
Notable speakers included Ms. Cécilia Cortese (AFD), Mr. Michael Sumser (KfW), and Nagaraj K (TÜV SÜD). A panel discussion featured experts from the EU, BGMEA, H&M Group, ILO, and City Bank PLC. Ms. Nurun Nahar, Deputy Governor, Bangladesh Bank highlighted the RMG sector’s role in foreign exchange and women’s empowerment. The event concluded with the distribution of investment grant cheques to nine RMG factories and participatory financial institutions, followed by closing remarks from Mr. Moni Shankar Kundu, Project Director of SREUP which marks a significant step towards a safer and more sustainable RMG sector in Bangladesh.
