Transformative Tales: The SREUP Experience – Closing Event

Bangladesh Bank hosted the closing ceremony of “Program to Support Safety Retrofits and Environmental Upgrades in the Bangladeshi RMG Sector” (SREUP) on 6th November 2024. The event celebrated SREUP’s remarkable achievements in promoting sustainable practices and improving safety standards within Bangladesh’s RMG industry. The Chief Guest of the event, Dr. Ahsan H. Mansur, Governor of Bangladesh Bank, delivered a keynote emphasizing the transformative legacy of development of SREUP and its alignment with Bangladesh’s vision for more sustainable RMG sector in Bangladesh. Ms. Nazma Mobarek, Secretary of the Financial Institutions Division, Ministry of Finance highlighted the importance of such initiatives in supporting sustainable industry growth. H.E. Mr. Michael Miller, Ambassador and Head of Delegation, EU Delegation in Bangladesh and H.E. Mr. Achim Tröster, German Ambassador to Bangladesh- offered their insights on the success of SREUP and expressed their commitments to partner Bangladesh in future endeavors. Mr. Moni Shankar Kundu, Director (SREUP) and Project Director of the SREUP, Bangladesh Bank, extended gratitude to all key stakeholders, including the funding partner AFD, the EU, and KfW for their support. Bangladesh Bank reaffirms its commitment to a sustainable, resilient RMG sector, pivotal for the country’s economic growth and international standing.

SREUP Technical Workshop on ‘Environmental & Social Guidelines and Reporting’

On September 25, 2024, the SREUP Project under Bangladesh Bank hosted a significant workshop focused on Environmental and Social Reporting (E&S) standards for participating PFIs and their clients RMG factories financed by SREUP credit line for safety, social and environmental upgrades within the Ready-Made Garments (RMG) sector at FARS Hotel & Resort in Dhaka.

The event was chaired by Mr. Moni Shankar Kundu, Director (SREUP) and Project Director SREUP PMU, Bangladesh Bank and brought together representatives from RMG factories and Participating Financial Institutions (PFIs), including both Commercial Banks and Non-Banking Financial Institutions (NBFIs).

The sessions included an in-depth overview of Environmental & Social Risk Management (ESRM) and Environmental & Social Due Diligence (ESDD) led by key experts from SREUP Bangladesh Bank team and Global Coordination Consultant (GCC). Open discussions with RMG factories and Participating Financial Institutions (PFIs) provided a platform for collaborative feedback on reporting mechanisms, reflecting the program’s emphasis on transparency and stakeholder engagement.

‘Talk Show titled ‘Empowering Sustainable Practices: The Role of SREUP in the RMG Sector in Bangladesh on World Environment Day’

On June 5, 2024, Channel i featured a talk show titled “Promoting Sustainability in Bangladesh’s RMG Sector,” organized by the SREUP Project Management Unit of Bangladesh Bank. The program included insights from distinguished guests: Dr. Ainun Nishant, an expert in Water Resource Management and Climate Change; Mr. Moni Shankar Kundu, Director and Project Director of SREUP PMU; and Mr. Jamal Uddin, CEO and Managing Director of IDLC Finance PLC. The discussion, led by Nawshad Mustafa, Director (PSD-3) of Bangladesh Bank, emphasized SREUP’s initiatives in environmental and social enhancements like ETPs, energy-efficient machinery, daycare facilities, and ambulance services, demonstrating their beneficial impact on RMG workers and overall productivity.

Bangladesh Bank Hosts SREUP Stakeholder Engagement & Grant Distribution Event

Bangladesh Bank celebrated the completion of the Stakeholder Engagement & Grant Cheque Distribution Event for the SREUP (Program to Support Safety Retrofits and Environmental Upgrades in the Bangladeshi Ready-Made Garments Sector) at Utshab Hall, Radisson Blu Dhaka Water Garden. The event gathered key stakeholders to share updates, distribute grants, and discuss sustainable finance in the RMG sector.

SREUP, which provides low-cost loans and incentive grants through financial institutions, aims to enhance environmental and economic sustainability. The project has disbursed significant funds to date. Dr. Md. Kabir Ahmed, Executive Director, Bangladesh Bank, and His Excellency, Mr. Charles Whiteley, Ambassador, Delegation of the European Union to Bangladesh emphasized their commitment to a safer and greener RMG industry.

Notable speakers included Ms. Cécilia Cortese (AFD), Mr. Michael Sumser (KfW), and Nagaraj K (TÜV SÜD). A panel discussion featured experts from the EU, BGMEA, H&M Group, ILO, and City Bank PLC. Ms. Nurun Nahar, Deputy Governor, Bangladesh Bank highlighted the RMG sector’s role in foreign exchange and women’s empowerment. The event concluded with the distribution of investment grant cheques to nine RMG factories and participatory financial institutions, followed by closing remarks from Mr. Moni Shankar Kundu, Project Director of SREUP which marks a significant step towards a safer and more sustainable RMG sector in Bangladesh.
